U.S. Rep. Sander M. Levin (D-Mich.), in reference to a vote in the house last week in favor of repealing a tax on medical devices. The tax, which is to be implemented in January, was intended to offset costs of subsidizing insurance coverage as part of the Obama health care law.
Proponents of the measure repeal the tax say it would jeopardize jobs for those in the medical technology field. Michigan is home to the Stryker Corporation. Stryker, which was named one of Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” in 2011, plans to reduce their global work force by 5 percent and says the tax is a factor in that decision. The repeal measure is not expected to pass in the Senate.
